How many times do you look over and see a child involved in pretend play? Children from a very young age engage in spirited and fun role play. This can be anything from using a pencil as a magic wand to whipping up something in their toy kitchen. Make Believe play is instrumental in developing many key skills in young children.

When a child is engaging in Imaginary play, some of the skills being developed are social and emotional skills. Getting the opportunity to act like someone else teaches him/her to walk in someone elses shoes. Letting them experience how others are possibly feeling. Also there is a give in take when switching up roles that is great for the child to learn about taking turns.

One of the most important things a child learns is cognitive thinking skills. This is a skill that will benefit them not only now but for a lifetime. Its what allows them to find creative solutions to problems. The skill of processing the information that attain. And as an adult good problem solving skills are a bonus in both work and interpersonal relationships.

Pretend play brings the imagination out in all of us. Studies have shown that kids that regularly are engaged in role play later on in life have much higher levels of narrative expression, allowing them to really be able to communicate on a higher level.

So many times its fun to listen in as your child engages in Make Believe play. Some of the vocabulary will amaze you. You will often find yourself and words and phrases you often say coming out of their mouths. Using this Imaginary play he is learning to use his vocabulary to tell a story. In life this will help his go from spoken word to written word easier.

Imaginary play also teaches kids to adapt and use what they have at hand. Watching a kid pick up a block to use as a phone or putting blocks on plates as food in their toy kitchen are all ways kids learn abstract thinking. The ability to use random objects to get them what they need is priceless as a lifetime skill.

Pretend play is so important that in virtually all young learning centers you will see a corner devoted to it. There you will often find many education toys that with imagination can be anything. Often you will also see toy kitchens which are one of the most popular ways to spark role playing. Wooden toys also serve as great props. Anything that inspires Invented play is a great addition to a young child or even older ones toy collections.

With the invention of video games, and all sorts of high tech toys creative play has taken a back burner; and it is really sad. Make Believe play inspires kids to dream and to be anything they wish. It allows them to pick up wooden toys and become a princess or a knight. Imaginary play allows them to spend an afternoon cooking up your favorite dish on their toy kitchen. Pretend play is what all little kids need to learn all of lifes important lessons.

I have a nephew who absolutely adores his Jurassic Park toys. He sleeps with them, eats with them, and well, of course… he plays with them, day in and day out. Although it initially baffled me why this little kid would actually like spending all his time with these dinosaur figures because they actually look like the real thing only in a miniature size which means they DO look scary and ready to chase after you and bite you, after observing Kylie playing during one of the afternoons I looked after him, I realized it was the excitement and the imaginary adventure the Jurassic Park toys brought that ultimately thrilled Kylie.

I remember that hit Steven Spielberg movie came out when I was around 9 years old. Kylies a few years shy that age, but his dad already made him watch the movie to his delight. Shortly after that Kylie begged everyone for a Jurassic Park toy for his birthday. And because my sweet little nephew is a smarty pants, he even told his mom and dad that they had to give him one birthday gift each. Not the usual one big wrapped box with the tag saying: Happy Birthday, Sweetie. We love you! The more people he could ask for gifts, the more Jurassic Park toys hed be getting.

I applauded my nephew for his tactics. I was so impressed that at his young age he could be so creative in terms of going after what he wants that I actually ended up buying him four Jurassic Park toys. I got him a Pteranodon which looks like a bird, and Kylie, immediately after opening my first gift box, ran around flapping its wings and snapping its beak. Theres also the Triceratops, my personal favorite among all four Jurassic Park toys I gave him. And of course the classic T-Rex and I added the young T-Rex for good measure. Kylie was just beyond ecstatic. He kept hugging me in delight. His mom and dad and other family friends also added to his little collection of dinosaurs. Kylie now has his own little world from all the Jurassic Park toys he got for his birthday.

Like I said, the make-believe adventure and journey those toys bring is exactly what makes it so appealing to my little nephew. Im sure other little boys out there would affirm.

I can only hope now that Kylie takes care of his Jurassic Park toys so that once the time comes that he outgrows them, he can still pass this little adventurous world to maybe a future little brother, a cousin… or who knows, maybe even his future kids.
